Vision
To spearhead the growth of a dynamic trade sector leading to the greater
prosperity of the nation.
Mission
To promote and facilitate trade by creating an enabling environment and to
provide prompt and efficient services to the private sector.
Objectives
To progressively increase exports during the plan period and thereby, reduce the
deficit on the overall balance of trade.
To create an open, liberal and stable enabling environment that is conducive for
the growth of the private sector and trade.
To promote the integration of the nation into the regional and international
trading system.
To promote competitive and fair trade practices within the country.
To strengthen the institutional and professional capacity of the Department to
fulfil its mandate.
Strategies
Diversification of export markets and products to reduce dependence on a few
markets.
Export promotion including use of market intelligence and information systems to
identify new markets, market research, participation in overseas trade fairs,
provision of marketing assistance to exporters and creating access to trade
finance.
Development of a dry port facility at Phuentsholing.
Strengthen the partnership between private sector exporters and the Department
of Trade.
Simplify current regulations and procedures for export and import licensing.
Progressive reduction of import tariffs and abolition of export taxes.
Strengthen long-term trade relations with principal trading partners, and
negotiate preferential trade treaties with new trading partners.
Complete the negotiations for accession to the WTO.
Promote the establishment of the South Asian Free Trade Arrangement (SAFTA)
within the SAARC region.
Assignment of trade attaches in our missions. (e.g. Bangkok, Delhi)
Monitor internal prices of essential commodities, enforce Maximum Retail Prices
and expand wholesale dealership of imported products.
Stimulate consumer awareness and develop consumer protection measures.
Strengthen the functional units of the Department of Trade including manpower
resources to provide efficient and effective services, and assistance to
prospective as well as established exporters and importers.
Improve the system for monitoring and analysis of trade data.
